VET Student Loans
A VET Student Loan (VSL) is a loan from the Australian Government that helps eligible students pay their tuition fees. Your loan is repaid through the Australian tax system when you reach the minimum income threshold for repayment. The minimum income threshold for repayment is set by the Australian Government each year and is published on Study Assist. Repayments continue until you have repaid your entire debt. It is important to note that your loan will remain a personal debt until it is repaid, and it may reduce your take-home (after-tax) wage and your borrowing capacity. You may wish to seek independent financial advice before applying. For more information on the VET Student Loans program, visit the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations VET Student Loans website.
The amount you can borrow for your tuition fees is determined by the Australian Government, this information is updated annually and can be found on their VET Student Loans Courses and Loan Caps – Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, Australian Government (dewr.gov.au). Your individual loan amount also depends on your current HELP loan balance, which can be checked on the My Help Balance website. A VET Student Loan is only for tuition fees and does not cover additional costs such as textbooks, materials, boarding and lodging cost related to clinical workshop attendance, uniform cost (student T-shirt), clinical placement related charges and purchase of equipment e.g., stethoscope, protective clothing etc.

Census Dates
A census date is the deadline for each study period (term) and is the date your VET Student Loan debt becomes applicable. If you withdraw from your course or study period on or before the relevant census date, you will not incur a VSL debt for that period. Withdrawals after the census date may result in a VSL debt.
Students are responsible for knowing the census dates that apply to their intake and study load. Please review the Census Dates 2025–2028 document carefully and contact Student Support if you have any questions.
For further information about the course intake dates please check the course webpage under the heading “Intake Dates” on the Diploma of Emergency Health Care page.
